Partería Montuna Scope of Practice

Montuna is a Direct Entry Midwife practice, from Traditional Midwifery and midwifery education preparation, on its way to obtain a Certified Professional Midwife accreditation. Our clinical liability insurance covers this understanding.

Traditional Midwives who—for religious, personal, political and philosophical reasons—choose not to become certified or licensed, believe that they are ultimately accountable to the communities they serve; or that midwifery is a social contract between the midwife and client/patient, and should not be legislated at all; or that women have a right to choose qualified care providers regardless of their legal status.

Direct-Entry Midwives are trained to provide the Midwives Model of Care to healthy women and newborns primarily in out-of-hospital settings. They do not have nursing education as a prerequisite for midwifery education. DEM most often turn into CPMs'.

Certified Professional Midwives is the only midwifery credential that requires knowledge about and experience in out-of-hospital settings. Their education and clinical training focuses on providing midwifery model care in homes and freestanding birth centers. CPMs may also practice in clinics and doctors offices providing well-woman and maternity care.

In Illinois, CPMs in Illinois can obtain and administer oxygen, ophthalmic prophylaxis, postpartum antihemorrhagic drugs, vitamin K, Rho immune globulin, intravenous fluids, prophylaxis for Group B streptococcus infection, ibuprofen, local anesthetic, and sterile subcutaneous injections. 225 Ill. Comp. Stat. 64/70(b). DEM’s without license can’t unless if working with another CPM/CNM but can give the necessary care and advice to a woman during pregnancy, labor, and the post-birth as monitrice autonomously.

In Montuna we do not:

1. Perform clinical tasks, or provide medical care. Although Jacoba is a Health Worker Clinic Specialist of CWHC and DEM Traditional Midwife, our role here as healers is to provide monitrice care, physical comfort, and support your healing process with natural remedies you’d confirm no allergies to, based on the symptoms, and medical history provided, and within our training.

2. Make decisions for you. We will help you get the information you need to make an informed and educated decision. Decision will always be yours.

3. Speak for you on future plans. We will advocate for your desires and you’ll be responsible for your decisions.

4. Rush you to have healing care if not ready. After intake and in full transparency of medical history, and current discomforts, we will create a plan with you, and for you, that will be ready to start whenever you are, and continue as you want it to.

Unforeseen Circumstances

We will do our best to help you prepare for your care, but we cannot guarantee that it will go exactly as planned. We can guarantee we will give you the best of our heart in the process. If you can’t come to our care spaces, we can accommodate you in your own place for an extra fee to cover gas.

Cancelation policy

Cancellations are considered “late” when the customer does not cancel or reschedule at least 12 hours prior to the scheduled appointment or reservation time. Late cancellations, including missed appointments, will result in the customer being charged a fee of 25% of the cost of the appt.
